When you think of Nagasaki, Hashima Island aka Gunkanjima is probably at the top of the list to visit on your itinerary. An abandoned coal mine island shaped like a battleship. However, there is another island to visit which shares a similar creepiness called “Ikeshima Island”.
Unlike Gunkanjima, Ikeshima is not falling to pieces yet. In fact, there are still people living on the island. During my visit, I stayed for a night there in a hotel. I am certain I’m the only person living in the hotel. I also visited a restaurant run by an old granny that serves a variety of delicious home-cooked food. I ordered a Katsudon for 900 yen. According to the hotel receptionist, the school nearby is still running with 9 students
I didn’t manage to photograph the interior of the abandoned buildings because they were all locked. However, I did manage to get some good aerial shots with my drone.
Overall, this is a good one day trip for abandoned places lovers like myself. I love the creepiness of the island and the best part is having to explore the island alone without any tourists. Personally, I would pick this place over the fake Amsterdam (if you know where I meant) all day.
